In 1996, Brígida Baltar started collecting things, actually materials, which are not collectable at all such as air, mist and sea breeze. What is most fascinating about this artistic concept born of a personal exigency is the attempt to grasp the ungraspable.
The concept generally reflects the wishes and desires of the recipient whereby a mental channel, a link to the individual imagination, is left open. Being ‘open’ or ‘receptive’ is the precondition for the artist’s collecting operations, which she usually conducts on her own using specially produced glass jars and bubble-plastic rucksacks. “By exporting the borderline of materiality, she creates a dialogue between the transparent and the opaque, between the wide horizons of an indefinite landscape and her own delicate, small body movements within it”, writes Ania Corcilius. And the artist conserves these intimate performative acts in photographs and videos, which are the only records of an intensely experienced reality.
