Elyla (b. 1989, Chontales, Nicaragua) is a performance artist, activist, and researcher. Rooted in Chontal territory and Central America, their practice engages ancestral memory, spirituality, affective auto-ethnography, and communal archaeology through embodied forms of inquiry that explore relationships between land, extraction, collective memory, and more-than-human worlds. Their work proposes anti-colonial forms of listening, healing, and becoming.
Their work is held in the collections of Museo Reina Sofía; the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum (TBA21 Collection); MACBA (Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona); KADIST; the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection; and the Ortiz-Gurdián Collection. They have participated in major international exhibitions including the Biennale di Venezia (2024), the Toronto Biennial (2024), and the XII Havana Biennial, among others. Elyla is a 2026 resident of Art Explora × Cité internationale des arts, Paris, and lives and works between Nicaragua and Switzerland.
